Walking your dog should be enjoyable, but many owners find themselves being dragged down the street by an excited pup. Loose lead walking takes patience and consistency, but with the right training techniques your dog can learn to walk calmly beside you.
Start training somewhere quiet
Begin training in a low-distraction area such as your backyard or a quiet street. This allows your dog to focus on learning before adding busier environments like parks or footpaths with other dogs.
Reward good behaviour
Positive reinforcement works best. When your dog walks beside you without pulling, reward them with a small treat, praise or encouragement.
Stop when your dog pulls
If your dog pulls ahead, simply stop walking. Wait until the lead loosens before moving again. This teaches your dog that pulling will not get them where they want to go.
Change direction
If your dog continues to pull, calmly turn and walk the other way. Your dog will quickly learn to pay attention to your movements and stay closer to you.
Keep sessions short and consistent
Short training sessions work best. Even 10–15 minutes of focused practice during each walk can make a big difference over time.
Loose lead walking takes patience, but with consistency your dog will learn to enjoy calm and relaxed walks.
